The Things We Hear When Life is Loud

God strengthens our roots through unexpected moments.

Some days, life is just a lot. Everything is moving fast, the schedule feels tight, you’re doing your best to keep up, and then it hits you that you forgot an appointment or you’re running late again. Your mind is pulled in ten different directions, and it feels like too much at once.

It’s usually on days like that, when we’re overwhelmed or distracted, that we accidentally overhear something we wish we hadn’t. A comment. A tone. A truth that wasn’t meant for us. And it hits a soft spot we didn’t expect.

But I always wonder if it’s really an accident. Or if God sometimes lets our ears catch something because He knows our heart needs it. Not to hurt us. Not to embarrass us. But to slow us down long enough to pay attention to something He’s trying to grow inside us.

When we’re tired and stretched thin, everything feels bigger. We hear things through stress instead of a settled heart. But when we slow down enough to breathe, step back, and actually listen, we start to hear differently.

This is where listening with roots matters.

Listening with roots means pausing instead of reacting. It means letting the Holy Spirit calm our hearts before we speak. It means having the humility to ask, “Lord, is this something I need to hear?” It means choosing to grow instead of getting defensive.

Some of the most important changes in us begin with the words we didn’t want to hear but needed to hear. They shine light on blind spots. They invite us to reflect. They gently push us toward deeper roots and a softer heart.

So if you’ve overheard something recently that stung a little, or if you feel like you’ve been reacting out of exhaustion more than intention, take a moment. Slow down. Take a breath. Let your heart settle back into its roots.

Ask God, “What are You showing me through this? What are You trying to grow in me?”

He uses the unexpected moments, the interruptions, the overheard conversations to shape us into women who listen deeply, respond gently, and stay rooted in His wisdom.

Scripture: James 1:19
Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.
